Found in the northwestern part of Florida and near the border with Alabama, Pensacola is Florida’s most western city, earning it the nickname “Western Gate to the Sunshine State”. It is separated from the Gulf of Mexico by Santa Rosa Island, and its long, white sandy beaches and emerald waters make it a popular holiday destination. The beaches owe their sugar-white colour to their 99.4% quartz crystal composition.
Also known as “America’s First Settlement,” Pensacola recently celebrated its 450th anniversary. The city is proud of its rich heritage, and there are several guided tours available to visitors, including a tour of Historic Pensacola Village, which illustrate the city’s history.
Throughout its history, Pensacola has been controlled by the British, the Spanish, the French, the Confederacy, and the United States, earning it the nickname “The City of Five Flags.” Many of the area’s festivals reflect its diverse heritage and represent the different communities of Pensacola.
Pensacola Bay also offers several cultural attractions for the art lover in you. Many museums, galleries and theatres animate the region’s arts scene. The great outdoors also has a place of honor in this town, and the array of adventures will captivate you. Explore the Gulf Islands National Seashore, the longest stretch of protected coastline in the United States – its beach has been voted Best Florida Beach by USA Today. You can scuba dive in the world’s largest artificial reef or fish from one of the longest piers to overlook the Gulf of Mexico.
A trip to Pensacola would not be complete without a visit to the National Naval Aviation Museum, which traces the history of American aviation since the First World War. It is one of the world’s largest air and space museum and is located in the largest air base in the world.
