Ranked among the top vacation destinations in the world, the city of Orlando is famous for its theme parks. However, its nickname, “The City Beautiful,” suggests much more!
The city of Orlando was founded in 1843 by Aaron Jernigan. It was originally named Jernigan, for its founder, but in 1857 it was renamed Orlando to honor a soldier who had fallen in the Florida War. At its founding, the city was a simple, rural area. After the war, the Reconstruction period began and the city experienced a population boom. From 1875-1895, Orlando became the center of the citrus industry. Unfortunately, from 1894 to 1895, the area suffered a usually long period of frost that forced many farmers to abandon their fruit farms.
Apart from the many popular theme parks, Orlando offers an abundance of activities! Even though Orlando welcomes more than 50 million tourists annually, the city reveals a surprisingly calm atmosphere.
Orlando offers distinct neighborhoods filled with art galleries, terraces, small cafes and shops for all tastes. Visit the old town, Old Orlando, where you can experience saloons and shops reminiscent of days gone by. The city’s cultural life is also highly developed, and is manifested through a wealth of art, history and science museums as well as various theaters.
If you’ve always dreamed of going on a hot air balloon ride, you can fulfill this wish in Orlando, as Orlando Balloon Rides is one of the largest hot air balloon operators in the world! See Florida as you’ve never seen it before—from up above! Departures are 20 minutes before sunrise every morning. You will have to get up early but it will definitely be worth it! Flying over the city in the morning sun is an incredible experience that will quickly make you forget your lack of sleep! Nature lovers will delight in canoeing on Shingle Creek, a waterway that leads straight to the Everglades. Be prepared to be mesmerized by the scenery and enchanted by the sounds of nature.
Fashion enthusiasts will get their fair share in Orlando as well. This city is known for its outlets which number almost as many as the theme parks! With big-name clothing brands at discount prices, everyone will find something to their liking.
Orlando’s theme parks are incredible, but don’t miss all the other activities that this charming city has to offer.
