About
Rich in history and activity, the city of Daytona Beach is the perfect destination for those who want to mix thrills with relaxation during their holidays!
A visit to this Florida city begins with its historic centre, which pays tribute to the Timucua, the Native Americans who were the original inhabitants of the region currently known as Daytona Beach. To learn about these people and their struggle against slavery on the cotton, rice and sugarcane plantations, visit the Halifax Historical Museum or the Bulow Plantation Ruins Historic State Park in Flager Beach, close to Daytona Beach. This historic centre is situated in the area where it originally began to expand in 1874 after Mathias Day built the first hotel. It was named Daytona by period residents who wanted to honor their founder.
Besides its history, Daytona Beach is world renowned for the car and motorcycle races held on its beach since the beginning of the 1900s. Today, the races take place on the Daytona International Speedway, an oval track used by NASCAR inaugurated in February 1959.
Though no longer used for racing, the location is still unique as one of the rare few beaches where it is possible to drive a car. Speaking of the beach, that particular 23 miles of sand at the end of Daytona Beach has had the title “World’s Most Famous Beach” since 1920! This incredible beach offers a variety of activities including volleyball, bike tours on the sand or even kayaking and surfing on the Atlantic Ocean! You can also enjoy a stroll on the boardwalk where, when you reach the port, you will discover a choice of restaurants suited to all appetites. Daytona Beach is known as Florida’s Festival Capital.
So, if you like crowds, you will get your share in the many festivals that take place throughout the year. Among the most popular are the Daytona Blues Festival, Biketoberfest, the Daytona Beach Film Festival as well as the Halifax Film Festival. Golf fans will also be thrilled with the area’s incredible greens (rated four stars by Golf Digest), which draw the sport’s biggest names every year!
In short, Daytona Beach will have you discovering and moving as much as relaxing and napping to the sound of the waves on the beach!
