Holding the Guinness World Record for the most consecutive days of sunshine—no less than 361 days a year—Clearwater has everything to make your holiday complete! The smallest of the three cities of the Tampa Bay Metropolitan Area, Clearwater is located just west of Tampa and north of St. Petersburg. Nestled between the Gulf of Mexico and Tampa Bay, it is separated from Clearwater Beach by the Intracoastal Waterway. The city is accessible via the Courtney Campbell Causeway, a magnificent bridge spanning Tampa Bay which joins Tampa and Clearwater. Crossing the bridge, you’ll feel like you’re driving on water.
Clearwater’s main attraction is undoubtedly its sandy beach, ranked the best beach in the Gulf of Mexico. This beach allows you to relax under Clearwater’s nearly constant sunshine while enjoying a host of activities in its turquoise waters.
A walk to the marina offers all types of potential destinations and activities, including sea excursions, scuba diving, deep-sea fishing and dolphin watching. You might want to arrange a romantic dinner on a boat to watch the sunset, or even a cruise on Captain Memo’s pirate ship (now that’s something the kids will really love!).
You can also visit the Clearwater Marine Aquarium, a nonprofit organization that rescues and cares for injured marine animals, then releases them back to the sea once they have recovered. On this outing you can observe sea turtles, pelicans, rays, sharks and dolphins being cared for. The best known permanent resident of the aquarium is Winter, a dolphin who lost her tail when she was caught in a crab trap. After being treated, she starred in the movie Dolphin Tale, the source of her fame!
Looking for a nature excursion? Head to Moccasin Lake Nature Park, where you can hike surrounded by huge oaks and relax while enjoying many types of birds, mammals and butterflies.
Finally, don’t miss the sunset on the promenade, known across the region for the best sunset view. It’s a celebration in itself to see so many people gathered on the promenade every evening to admire nature’s beauty.
